TMC-TJC: IF YOU WERE A SHOE, ANY SHOE, WHAT SHOE WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
RB-BSL: “I’d be a super glamourous stiletto, or something a woman would wear on her wedding day. I’d like to be on a woman’s foot when she is feeling her most sexxy, her most beautiful, special and lovely.”
TMC-TJC: ACCORDING TO THE REVIES YOU RECEIVE FROM CLIENTS ON YELP.COM IT APPEARS THAT YOU ARE QUITE THE LADY’S MAN. WHEN IT COMES TO SELLING SHOES, IS IT BUSINESS OR PLEASURE THAT MAKES YOU THE BEST IN BROOKLYN?
RB-BSL: “I went to an all male military boarding school. My dating life is stupid and mostly uneventful. Girls, women, remain kind of a Junior High Mystery to me. Working at the shoe store has been like being at a bridal shower, or hanging out with the girls talking about what they are going to wear to the prom. Selling shoes to women is like doing magic.”
TMC-TJC: WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE SHOE TREND DU JOUR?
RB-BSL: “For NYC, a place where a woman has to walk, towering monstrosities, giant platforms and hooker booties, I don’t like any of that stuff. Those types of shoes, and moreover their current popularity seems almost demeaning and totally impractical to me.”
TMC-TJC: DO YOU THINK SHOES ARE RECESSION PROOF?
RB-BSL: “When everything was being rationed during WWII, lipstick sales went through the roof. Shoes are recession proof because we have to have that feeling of buying lovely things. When you cannot buy a house or a diamond, those new shoes feel pretty great.”
TMC-TJC: WHAT ARE YOUR FIVE FAVORITE WORDS THAT RHYME WITH SHOE?
RB-BSL: “Emu.” “Screw.” “Crew Cut.” “Beef Stew.” “And of course, the Blues.”
TMC-TJC: WHAT MAKES SHOEMARKET SPECIAL?
RB-BSL: ”This might sound crazy, but it is a really human place, this store. Williamsburg is a really cool place and I am not talking about what’s on MTV or in magazines. It’s a real community, a true neighborhood. You buy a pair of shoes from me, and I’m going to see you later at a party, or you are going to be my waitress at Dumont. We at Shoemarket have a real good, down home, human time.”
TMC-TJC: CAN YOU SEND US OUT WITH A SHOE RELATED HAIKU?
RB-BSL: Shoes colorful birds
confections, women smile laugh
girls, always looking
