What were you thinking about when you were making “Attack of the Shoe Monsters”? I was really just thinking about all the shoes that need some lovin’. Also puppies. Also a town where the worst thing that could happen is still pretty much the best thing ever. More shoes!!
Do you have a favorite page in the book? Before any monster action starts, a girl is daydreaming about tanning on a front lawn among a huge JC shoe collection. Also any page with a monster– those were really fun to draw!
What’s your favorite shoe from the “Vault”? The Tardy!! I’ve never been so tall and so comfortable at the same time!
If you could give this to anyone, who would it be? Writer/Illustrator Dallas Clayton, whose An Awesome Book really inspired me to make books of my own.
When you’re not making little books, what are you doing? Making animations, painting, rollerblading, eating muffins at Variety, embroidering hats! I am graduating from The Cooper Union School of Art this semester, so I have been mostly working on a claymation project to show in my senior exhibition.
Coffee or Tea? Iced Coffee & Hot Tea
New York or LA? NY has the city, but CA has everything else!!!
Girls, Broad City, or Gossip Girl? Girls actually hurts me, but I just can’t stop..
Welcome to the JC Dollar Store made in a happy faux collaboration with the 99Cent Only Store on Sunset Boulevard. In proper Project Runway fashion, we asked our amazing stylist, Keely Murphy, to come up with 10 outfits from the 99C Store! ~ Here’s what she came up with ;]

Could you talk about each of the three photo series?
Michelle + Keely: For each series we wanted to do more than just product on paper. We wanted to create a world for each collection. We also wanted to experiment with ideas that were floating around in our heads. We first bonded over our love for the X-Files so we wanted to make something that referenced the “I want to believe” poster and we thought the furry monster boots would be the perfect pairing. We looked into some horror films and of course the classic who done it “Clue” for the Spooky Wine Party. We also wanted to experiment with back lighting and we had a fog machine, so why not. For the girls room image we wanted to create a felt familiar but was slightly off. We picked all the pastel kitten heels because they represented a bizarre time period and we played into that with the props.
Do you have a favorite?
M: The videos we made to pair with the stills was my favorite part of the project. I loved the challenge of trying to encapsulate the vibe of each collection in a few seconds.
K: Mountain Scene!!!! I’m really into the mixed media and who doesn’t love a miniature tree!
How did you guys make these dang sets? Where were you? With what materials?
K: We shot all three scenes a large white backdrop and a table!! Each image began that way, setting up a still life is like stacking cards lol. We used so much different stuff! Paper paint carpet fabric sheets pyrotechnics mini trees fishing line giant clamps wigs pennies crystals candelabras champagne flutes tupperware and a lotta puddy!!!!
M: and lots of lights.
Whats the favorite shoe style that you used?
M: Seeme from the girls bedroom set. love any shoe that makes me think of Cinderella’s glass slipper, plus its pink.
K: The Fosse-Lo dammit and its sold out!!!!!!!!!
When you’re not doing mini JC photo sets ~ What are you doing?
M: I take ceramics classes, embroider, think about going to the gym and bake brownies.
K: Similarly I paint on some things, order clothes on line, put together wacky outfits and back cookies!!!
Do you believe in free wifi?
M: Do I trust this network? Hell no! Trust no one.
K: I did until I read Michelle’s answer!! Trust no one.
What is the future of footwear?
M: Shoes that look like hands
K: In home 3D printing for teenage girls
